MLA Style Guide

Authors

One author

A single author should be listed by last name, then first name. Spell out specific information, when necessary for a citation, such as "editor," "translator," "edited by," etc.

Last name first, followed by a comma and then first name and then the middle initial (if given).

Bagchi, Alaknanda M.

Two authors

The second author should be in normal order. Use the conjunction "and," not an ampersand [&].

Smith, Andrew and Amber Jones.

Three or more authors

For three or more authors of a single work, list the first authors followed by a comma and the Latin phrase "et al" which means "and others."

Smith, Andrew, et al.

Two or more items from the same author

If there are two or more items from the same author, the subsequent entries are listed as ---. (three hyphens and a period) instead of repeating the name and arranged alphabetically by the book's title.

Smith, Andrew. "How to Cite in APA."
---. "How to Cite in MLA."
